Michael Jordan’s Mythical AJ6 ‘Infrared Salesman’ Sneaker Is Coming This Spring … from Maxim Maxim Staff

A never-released Air Jordan 6 sneaker will finally be available for public purchase nearly three decades after it was mysteriously pulled from production. Michael Jordan first sported an “Infrared” version of the Tinker Hatfield-designed silhouette amid the Chicago Bulls’ 4-1 playoff run against the Los Angeles Lakers, the series during which the GOAT won the first of his six NBA titles.

While the AJ6 Infrared scheme has re-released a number of times since, this version, which features an Infrared shade spread from the heel to the midsole and toebox, never made its way out of a 1999 season preview catalog. But this year, the so-called Air Jordan 6 Infrared “Salesman” is finally coming to market. The details are derived directly from Jordan’s championship-winning original, including the extended Infrared placement across the midsole, a black nubuck upper, a visible Air unit in the heel, and a Dynamic Fit inner sleeve.

Nike says that the specific shade of Infrared wasn’t pulled from the archives, but reverse engineered by comparing Jordan’s 1991 kicks to the 2000 pairs side by side to ensure the exact specs were met. Even the internal bootie construction and tongue height have been altered to recreate MJ’s playoff-worn kicks.

Alluding to its previously unreleased legacy, the new design includes “sample” text printed on its inner collar, as well as a factory hangtag and packaging that resemble pre-production packaging.

“It’s the centerpiece of the Infrared Collection,” said Terrance Harvey, Expert, Streetwear Footwear Product Management Icons, Jordan Brand. “MJ won his first championship in this colorway, and since then, it has represented greatness. I’m excited for this newly reimagined icon to inspire fans to always strive for more.”

Accompanied by an apparel pack including Infrared design graphics, the Jordan Brand AJ6 Infrared “Salesman” drops alongside an AJ1 Low and Flight Court February 14 on Nike’s website.
