What You Should Know:
– Philips announced a triple suite of major innovations at RSNA 2025, reinforcing its commitment to safety, precision, and sustainability in diagnostic imaging and image-guided therapy.
– The announcements include the wider commercial availability of LumiGuide 3D Device Guidance, the launch of the Verida AI-powered spectral CT system, and the introduction of the BlueSeal Horizon 3.0T MRI platform featuring the world’s first helium-free 3.0T magnet.
I. LumiGuide: Real-Time, Radiation-Free 3D Device Guidance
Philips announced the expanded commercial availability of LumiGuide 3D Device Guidance across Europe and the United States. LumiGuide is the world’s first real-time AI-enabled, light-based 3D navigation solution for image-guided therapy, marking a breakthrough in radiation safety.
Transforming Navigation with Light, Not X-ray
LumiGuide, powered by Philips Fiber Optic RealShape (FORS) technology, allows physicians to visualize and guide devices inside the body using light instead of continuous X-ray. By reflecting light along an optical fiber integrated into the guidewire, the system shows high-resolution, full-color 3D images instantly.
This technology allows for navigation with high precision while significantly reducing radiation exposure for both patients and clinical staff. Clinical data shows that complex cases such as aortic repair procedures can be performed 37% faster and with up to 56% DAP reduction.
“I have done over 160 fenestrated and branched aortic procedures with LumiGuide and have found that the system improves efficiency, reduces the procedure time, and reduces time on the fluoroscopy pedal to near zero,” said Adam W. Beck, MD, Professor and Director, Division of Vascular Surgery & Endovascular Therapy, University of Alabama at Birmingham.
LumiGuide seamlessly integrates with Philips Azurion, the company’s proven image-guided therapy platform.
II. Verida: The World’s First Detector-Based Spectral CT Fully Powered by AI
Philips also unveiled Verida, the world’s first detector-based spectral CT fully powered by AI. This marks a transformative milestone where AI optimizes the entire imaging chain—from acquisition to reconstruction—to lower system noise, elevate image quality, and accelerate clinical workflow.
Spectral Precision and Accelerated Workflow
Verida utilizes Philips’ proprietary Spectral Precise Image technology, a deep learning AI reconstruction engine, to generate superior spectral image quality with minimal noise. Spectral CT measures how tissues absorb different X-ray energy levels, allowing the differentiation of materials that appear identical on conventional CT.
Key benefits of the Verida system include:
- Speed: Reconstructs 145 images per second, automatically completing entire exams in less than 30 seconds—2x faster than before, enabling up to 270 exams daily.
- Safety & Sustainability: Can achieve dramatic dose reduction without compromising image quality and reduce energy consumption by up to 45%.
- Clinical Impact: Supports the goal of making spectral imaging routine for all patients, offering more comprehensive insights and potentially reducing the need for invasive procedures.
“The clinical benefits of Verida will fundamentally change my approach to cardiac imaging,” said Prof. Eliseo Vañó Galván, cardiovascular radiologist and Chairman of the CT & MR Department at Hospital Nuestra Sra. Del Rosario, Madrid, Spain.
III. BlueSeal Horizon: Helium-Free 3.0T MRI Platform
Finally, Philips unveiled BlueSeal Horizon, an entirely new 3.0T MRI innovation platform featuring the world’s first helium-free 3.0T magnet. This is a pivotal advance in MRI innovation, bringing key sustainability and operational benefits to the most advanced MRI technology in widespread clinical use.
Advancing Sustainability and Access
3.0T MRI systems provide high-resolution imaging for complex clinical cases, such as the brain and blood vessels. By eliminating the need for helium, the BlueSeal Horizon platform:
- Reduces Total Lifecycle Risk: Eliminates the need for helium refills.
- Simplifies Siting: Eliminates the need for vent pipes, reducing installation complexity.
- Expands Access: Brings advanced diagnostic capabilities to locations previously out of reach.
“With BlueSeal Horizon we’re freeing MRI from dependence on a valuable resource the world can’t replace,” said Ioannis Panagiotelis, PhD, Business Leader, MR at Philips.
Next-Generation AI on the Horizon Platform
BlueSeal Horizon is also an AI-powered platform designed to enhance diagnostic precision and simplify workflows. Key AI innovations include:
- SmartPlanning: Expands to cardiac imaging, automating time-consuming planning steps in as little as 30 seconds.
- SmartSpeed Precise: Uses Dual AI technology to enable scans up to three times faster and images up to 80% sharper.
- Real-time Scan Preview: Allows radiologists to preview scans and adjust parameters instantly for workflow optimization.
