For just a two-year run in the 1970s, the Timex Black Max was as covetable as can be. Those who’ve eagerly awaited its return are in luck with the new Huckberry x Timex 1979 Black Max.

The latest collaboration between the famed American watchmaker and the rugged purveyors of everyday carry essentials, menswear and gear at Huckberry takes aim at 1970s-era racing watches retooled with modern updates. Now on sale for a mere $249, the Huckberry x Timex 1979 Black Max is about as collectible (and fast-selling) as it gets. There’s no shortage of mystique to the original version of the Black Max, as at least one Reddit watch collector tracked down a 1970s French version of the Black Max, produced under the Kelton name for Timex: History in the watch world always tends to run deep, and a commercial featuring a Maserati speeding along even helped promote the watch decades ago.

Billed by Huckberry as a “bold reissue of a Timex classic,” the OG version of this racing-inspired watch (not unlike a Porsche Design timepiece, at least at first glance) was also a covetable vintage watch collectible, according to Timex. The new version pays homage in tasteful fashion to its predecessor, using a 41mm titanium case for modern durability, along with a stainless steel, all-black strap.

A grey tachymeter adorns the dial, which fuses sport and road-ready style via its contrasting black dial and white indices, along with an eye-catching orange seconds hand. Huckberry branding adorns both the crown and the caseback on the Huckberry x Timex 1979 Black Max, which should also prove plenty hardy in the water on a winter getaway: It’s built with 100 meters of water resistance to complement the famously reliable Timex analog quartz movement within.

Luminant hands and the ability to swap out the 20mm stainless steel strap for most any other 20mm straps give this timepiece a sense of versatility and wearability (beyond just its collectible nature). Timex notes the exclusive reissue is “a vintage- style standout for the modern wearer,” honoring both the all-black profile of the 1978 original, plus the “bold spirit of late-’70s sport design in a modern form.”

Available only for a limited time online at both Huckberry and Timex, the Huckberry x Timex 1979 Black Max pays homage to a heady time in watchmaking history, but it likely won’t stick around on the market for too long: Amp up your wrist game accordingly.
