Affordable Camping Made Easy

More than 50 years ago, a boom in outdoor recreation spread across the country, and camping became one of the defining experiences for families and friends in America. Since 1962, KOA has supported this culture of camping by providing affordable, full-featured campgrounds with options for everyone, whether you want a tent site, RV hookup, or cozy cabin. Now, with more than 500 locations from coast to coast and new booking tools and amenities, KOA is ready for the next chapter in America’s love affair with camping. Jenny McCullough, associate vice president of brand growth at KOA, has the dream job of helping campers discover and engage with the outdoors. Here, she shares all the ways KOA is connecting people to nature.

Outside: How does KOA help families and friends enjoy the outdoors?

Jenny McCullough: At Kampgrounds of America, we believe spending time outdoors is one of the best ways to reconnect with what’s most important: friends, family, and ourselves. In busy, screen-filled lives, camping is a much-needed escape. Being outdoors is great for physical and mental health. Whether you’re hiking a new trail, gathering firewood, throwing a Frisbee, or just chatting with loved ones, spending time outside in nature is a way to escape busy lives and reconnect with what’s important.

I have so many fond memories of my own family camping trips. Those uninterrupted moments of conversation around the fire are truly priceless. Our mission at KOA is to make affordable camping reservations accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of your preferred accommodation style or budget.

What type of camping is possible at a KOA?

Each site is different, but we hope there’s something for everyone. If you love traditional camping, we have spacious tent sites. For RVers, KOA Journey locations offer convenient, long pull-through sites, perfect for an overnight stop. For a longer vacation, RV sites at full-hookup KOA Holiday grounds are some of the most affordable campgrounds for extended stays.

If you’re wondering where to find affordable camping cabins, we have some fantastic options. Single- or two-room camping cabins are great for couples or those new to camping. Or, choose a deluxe cabin with a private bathroom and, at some locations, a kitchenette, TV, patio, or fire pit. KOA Resort sites have pools and premium amenities, and we even have places where you can try glamping in a yurt, treehouse, or teepee.

The KOA Rewards loyalty program helps campers get 10% off their stays, earn points for cash discounts on future trips, and enjoy a free night during our Rewards Weekend. It all adds up to make getting away easier and more affordable.

How do you find the right KOA for your group?

Finding the perfect spot is a crucial part of planning a successful trip. We have more than 500 sites across North America, but with the Find a KOA tool on our website and in the app, you can easily narrow it down.

Try searching by a specific city or state, or look for campgrounds near attractions you want to visit. You can use filters to match your group’s specific needs. Looking for a place with a swimming pool and minigolf to keep the kids entertained? You can filter for that. Need a pet-friendly location with a KampK9 dog park? No problem. You can also filter by accommodation type, so if you are searching for affordable RV camping sites, you’ll find them right at your fingertips.

By customizing your search to build the perfect adventure, you can be sure the campground has all the amenities and activities your group is looking for before you even leave home.

What are the latest trends in camping?

Based on our latest Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report, we’re seeing that the sector is now stabilizing after a huge surge in new campers. Value for money is a big deal for everyone right now, so we’re delighted that 72% of campers see camping as a cost-effective travel option. To find the best deals on camping, remember to check out our regular money-saving offers.

One of the biggest trends we’ve noticed is that while RVing remains extremely popular, there’s growing interest in glamping and cabin stays, which are almost twice as popular as they were in 2019, particularly with Gen Z. People want the experience of being in nature but with added comfort and convenience.

There’s also an upsurge in awareness of how camping can boost wellness, with 42% of campers motivated by a desire to improve their mental health. Water-based relaxation and stargazing are popular ways to mindfully connect with nature and, of course, are perfect for campers!

What’s the secret to having a great camping vacation?

A little planning goes a long way. Before you go, make a checklist of essentials. You don’t want to be the one who forgot the can opener! Pack layers, of course, as a sunny day can quickly turn to a chilly night.

However, the real secret is to have an open mind. Things may not always go exactly to plan when you’re camping, but it’s just part of the adventure! Use the trip as an opportunity to disconnect from your normal routine. Put down your phone, have conversations, and be present in the moment.

At KOA, we try to make it as easy as possible. If you do forget something, it’s not the end of the world. Our camp stores are stocked with the essentials. With a range of lodging, from tent sites to deluxe cabins, you can find the best-value camping options for families so everyone can relax. The goal is to slow down, engage with your loved ones, soak up nature, and make memories that will last a lifetime.
