While the first trailer for The Drama cordially invites viewers to “the wedding of the year,” the prospect of Robert Pattinson and Zendaya’s characters’ marriage seems less than certain. The new movie is described briefly by A24 as the tale of “a happily engaged couple [who’s] put to the test when an unexpected turn sends their wedding week off the rails.” The trailer, set to Donna Lewis’s 1996 pop earworm “I Love You Always Forever,” is paced accordingly: the first half shows flashbacks of standard relationship tropes and an awkward wedding portrait session, while the last half the trailer shows signs of unraveling with outbursts, boozing, and a bloodied nose.
The movie is director Kristofer Borgli’s fourth feature film and his second English-language film—his first was A24’s Nicolas Cage-led Dream Scenario, released in 2023, Variety reports. While few other details were formally released about the plot, an A24 Instagram post depicting an engagement announcement in the Boston Globe newspaper revealed more:
“Mr. and Mrs. Roger Harwood of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, announce the engagement of their daughter, Emma Harwood, to Charlie Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Thompson of London, England. Mr. Harwood, a decorated military veteran, is proud to share this joyous news. Miss Harwood is a 2013 graduate of Portside High School and a 2017 honors graduate of Boston University, where she earned her B.A. degree in English. She is currently employed at Mission Brooks. The future groom, Mr. Thompson, was a 2004 graduate of Eaton College and went on to earn his Ph.D in Art History from Tufts University. He serves as the Director of the Cambridge Art Museum.”
