Live updates: Senators work through weekend on shutdown deal; Trump to attend Commanders game from the Hill

Senators will again gather at the Capitol on Sunday in an attempt to negotiate an end to the now 40-day government shutdown, after a rare Saturday session yielded little progress despite mounting pressures.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) told reporters entering the weekend that lawmakers will remain in session until a deal is reached to reopen the federal government. Republican leaders opted against holding a vote on Saturday afternoon, but one is possible later Sunday as negotiators work to wrap up a deal on the three-bill “minibus.”

Senate Democrats, meanwhile, are still pushing an offer to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits for one year,

The effects of the shutdown have intensified in recent days. After the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered reduced air travel at dozens of major airports, more than 1,000 flights were canceled on Saturday for the second consecutive day.

And after the Supreme Court temporarily halted a lower court order requiring the Trump administration to make full Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) payments for November, funding for the food aid program remains in limbo as the shutdown stretches on.

President Trump, meanwhile, is set to return from his Mar-a-Lago on Sunday with plans to attend the Washington Commanders-Detroit Lions NFL game in Landover, Md.

ESPN reported on Saturday that the president wants the Commanders to name their new stadium after him, and he is expected to discuss his wishes with the leader of the football team’s ownership group while at the game.
