Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) was scammed Thursday by a group claiming to be a cleaning crew, according to authorities.
Multiple people claiming to be HVAC workers reportedly visited the delegate’s home and managed to charge her credit card. The case is being investigated as felony fraud, local outlets reported.
Norton paid the individuals $4,362 in total even though no work was performed, according to a police report obtained by NBC Washington. A friend ultimately called the credit card company to have the charges canceled.
In the report, police said they were told Norton is suffering from “early stages of dementia” and that the friend who called the police has the delegate’s power of attorney.
“The Congresswoman employs a house manager who oversees all maintenance services, so she initially assumed her staff had arranged the visit and provided her credit card for payment,” Norton’s office told NBC Washington.
“Upon notifying her house manager, who reviewed Ring doorbell footage and confirmed that no such appointment had been scheduled, the incident was immediately reported to the police.”
Norton’s office did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment.
