Mitt Romney ‘heartbroken’ as police investigate sister-in-law’s death from the Hill Ryan Mancini

Former Massachusetts Gov. and Utah Sen. Mitt Romney (R) said he’s heartbroken after his sister-in-law was found dead in a parking garage in Santa Clarita, Calif., on Friday.

“Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives,” Romney said in a statement obtained by People magazine. “We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

At around 9 p.m. on Friday, homicide investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department were called to the 24000 block of Town Center Drive in Santa Clarita for a death investigation, according to a sheriffs department advisory.

Authorities identified the woman found as Carrie Elizabeth Romney, 64, of Valencia, Calif. Valencia is a neighborhood in the city of Santa Clarita.

“The cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner’s Office,” the sheriffs department stated. No additional information was released.

Mitt Romney served as the governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007. He launched two presidential campaigns, one in 2008 and the next in 2012. He won the 2012 nomination but lost to former President Obama, who won a second term.

He served as one of Utah’s senators from 2019 to 2025 before retiring from politics. He notably voted to convict President Trump during his first impeachment trial in 2020 and his second in 2021.
