Live updates: CDC rescinds some layoff notices; Trump heads to Israel, Egypt from the Hill

The Trump administration reversed layoff notices for some Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) staff after over 1,000 employees were notified of layoffs amid the current government shutdown, according to multiple reports.

Multiple sources familiar with the matter told news outlets including The New York Times and Washington Post that those who were notified of layoffs Friday included people on teams on infectious disease outbreaks, science and health data analysis and employee safety.

Meanwhile, President Trump is heading to the Middle East on Sunday afternoon, where he is slated to address Israel’s Knesset early Monday morning and then head to coastal resort area of Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt where he is expected to participate in a Middle East peace ceremony, according to the White House.

In Congress, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is facing growing pressure among the House GOP to bring the chamber back to Washington amid a shutdown fight with no end in sight.

A growing number of GOP lawmakers are voicing frustrations with their leadership for prolonging the House recess, warning that the optics surrounding that inactivity could backfire on the party to the benefit of Democrats.
